Yesterday, August 3, the VI Chersonese International Opera and Ballet Festival officially began in the museum reserve. This year, for the first time in Crimea, the Mikhailovsky Theater is presenting Sergei Prokofiev's ballet Romeo and Juliet with choreography by Nacho Duato.
At the beginning of the opening ceremony Mikhail Razvozzhayev, Governor of Sevastopol delivered the welcome speech of the President of the Russian Federation to the participants, organizers and guests of the event.
"Dear Friends! Greetings and congratulations on the opening of the VI Chersonese International Opera and Ballet Festival. It is gratifying that your wonderful project has found a home at the Chersonesos Taurica Museum Reserve, while the historical landmarks of the ancient city have served as a spectacular backdrop for classical opera and ballet performances for several years. I believe the current festival program will fully meet the expectations of the most sophisticated audiences and will give everyone the joy of seeing real art, leaving vivid and unforgettable memories," Vladimir Putin noted.
According to Mr. Razvozzhayev, it is significant that the festival takes place at this very moment. "Because art is above all. It testifies to the strength of our country, the strength of our character. The festival is held under the patronage of President Vladimir Putin, and it is the sixth time it has taken place in Sevastopol. To any sanctions, to any attempts to "cancel Russia," we here, in Sevastopol, reply with confidence in our country's strength and potential," Mikhail Razvozzhayev emphasized.
"It's great to have such continuity of holding these festivals here on the open stage, we build this stage every year, and we understand that once the cultural cluster is completed, it will transform into the Opera and Ballet Theater. The format will be preserved, but with a new interpretation and building. Of course, as usual, the best choreography schools from all over Russia will come to Sevastopol. Therefore, the main thing is continuity, exchange of experience and enhancement of the already developed concept," - expressed the general opinion of the festival organizers Natalia Popova, President of "Vision Media Center LLC".
"Sergei Prokofiev's music is commonly referred to as the best ballet score of the twentieth century. Thanks to the international creative team: Spanish choreographer Nacho Duato, Iraqi artist Jaffar Chalabi, and Serbian costume designer Angelina Atlagic, the music has been vividly embodied. Today the lead roles in Romeo and Juliet are being performed by leading soloists of the Mikhailovsky Theater, Viktor Lebedev and Anastasia Soboleva," said Alexei Lebedev, Director of the Russian Seasons project.
The ballet is accompanied by the Mikhailovsky Theater Symphony Orchestra. The show is performed under the baton of Alexander Solovyov, Principal Conductor of the Mikhailovsky Theater.
According to Elena Morozova, director of the Chersonesos Taurica Museum Reserve, there are many different events in Tauric Chersonesos, but the Chersonese Opera and Ballet Festival is held with special reverence so that everyone can experience the world of high art and culture: "I am delighted that today Chersonesos Taurica gathered a full house of guests and especially pleased that this year the festival will have a larger program. The Sevastopol Opera and Ballet Theater has already presented gala concerts; ahead are performances of the Mikhailovsky Theater with a magnificent performance of "Romeo and Juliet" and, of course, the famous Tabakerka with Vladimir Mashkov. I'm sure our guests will remember this festival like no other.
