Young Choreographer Festival was founded to popularize and develop the art of choreography among the younger generation in Russia. This is a unique initiative of a cultural figure, choreographer, and People's Artist of Russia, Boris Eifman. The festival is held in St. Petersburg at the Boris Eifman Dance Academy with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, the Russian Culture Fund, and the Committee for Culture of St. Petersburg.
On Thursday, June 3 , the concert will be broadcast, featuring fragments of ballet works by the Academy's contemporary choreography workshop. La Sylphide is a ballet that established the romantic style in dance for many years and became one of the major theatrical legends of the 19th century. The illusiveness and unattainability of dreams are revealed through the story of the young Scotsman, James. He promised his heart to a girl from his native village, but he met a lovely spirit of the air, Sylphide.
The Cavalry Halt s a one-act playful sketch that tells the story of a cavalry hussar regiment staying in an Austrian village. Consequently, the dim "amorous" relationships of the "ballet peasants" have reached a previously uncommon brilliance and intensity.
The rich flavor of oriental melodies, the impetuous dance rhythm, and particular colorfulness can be felt in the music of Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian for the ballet Gayane.
Marius Petipa's Esmeralda to music by Cesar Pugni and Ricardo Drigo, a masterpiece from the era of classical romanticism, choreographically reinterpreted by Yuri Burlak to give a new perspective on Victor Hugo's famous novel Notre Dame de Paris and the touching love story of a gypsy woman.
The Boris Eifman Academy of Dance is an innovative choreographic school established in St. Petersburg in 2013. It trains versatile ballet dancers of the 21st century, equally proficient in classical and contemporary dance. Boris Eifman Dance Academy students, along with the heritage of the Russian ballet school, study jazz dance, modern and contemporary. Outstanding Russian and foreign choreographers and teachers, such as Azari Plisetsky, Akram Khan, Ana Laguna, Jean-Guillaume Bar, Clairmarie Osta, Noah Gelber, Stefan Zeromsky, Wayne McGregor, and others, trained them.
As usual, the broadcasts will be available at 19:00 CET.
