BERLIN TO MEET COMMANDERS OF THE GREAT PATRIOTIC WAR

From September 10 to October 4, a theme exhibition "Commanders of the Great Patriotic War" will be displayed at the Russian House for Science and Culture in Berlin. The exposition will describe 11 outstanding military leaders, representatives of the new Soviet school of military science; it is based on materials from the funds of the Moscow "Victory Museum" as part of the international cultural project "Russian Seasons" in Germany.

Visitors will see a video presentation dedicated to the brilliant constellation of talented military leaders and commanders that emerged in time of the Great Patriotic War. Here one can learn how the leadership talents had been developing in the course of hard battles.

The eleven prominent commanders include one Generalissimo, nine Field Marshals, and one General of the Army. They all were holding the Order of Victory, the highest military decoration in the USSR; it was awarded for successful operations maintained on the scale of one or more battle fronts that have radically changed the situation in favor of the Red Army.

Joseph Stalin, Georgy Zhukov, Alexander Vasilevsky were awarded the Order of Victory twice.

The Soviet military leaders carried out more than 50 strategic operations, including 35 offensives, and maintained about 250 army group and 1000 army operations. Soviet troops defeated more than 600 Divisions of Germany and its allies, destroyed the bulk of the military equipment of the German armed forces in the battles: about 32,000 tanks, self-propelled artillery platforms, and assault guns, over 50,000 aircraft, and 280,000 artillery pieces. The losses of the German army on the Eastern Front made up over 70% of all losses of the Wehrmacht forces in World War II.

Firm and confident leadership over the entrusted troops, careful preparation of military operations, flexibility of thinking, profound knowledge of military affairs, breadth of vision, and unflinching courage are a defining characteristic of the commanders of the Great Patriotic War.

Being the All-Russian Research, Historical and Methodological Center dedicated to the World War II and the Great Patriotic War, the Victory Museum (Moscow) is one of the leading military and historical museums worldwide. Its main exhibition area takes more than 3,000 square meters, containing over 6,000 exhibits.
